How to Calculate Cubic Yards for Excavation
A straightforward method for converting length, width, and depth into cubic yards for excavation and material estimating.
The basic method
Calculate the volume in cubic feet, then divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards. If your depth is in inches, divide it by 12 first. For example, a 40 ft × 30 ft area at 12 inches deep is 40 × 30 × 1 = 1,200 cubic feet, or about 44.44 cubic yards.

Field conditions can change the actual cost. Consider access, existing utilities, soil conditions, water, disposal requirements, trucking distance, equipment availability, and any scope exclusions that affect the work.
